Eli Apple Challenged with Guarding ODB at Giants OTAs
On just the first day of Giants OTAs, their 10th overall pick Eli Apple was thrusted right into the action. Assigned with covering All-Pro wideout Odell Beckham, Apple had one hell of a first day. According to ESPN, he covered Odell on a number of routes, but never had the ball actually thrown his way.
When asked about his first day, Apple said "It was interesting for sure.. He runs his routes well. He's a fast guy. It was fun going against him. They didn't throw the ball his way when I was going against him, but you can tell, with his explosiveness and how he gets out of breaks. It's impressive."
So I'm gonna go ahead and take that as a good sign that Eli didn't throw his way. The 20-year old Apple also got to go against Dwyane Harris and Myles White, where he reportedly held his own.
Now the biggest question is how he will fit in with DRQ and newly singed Jenoris Jenkins. And the answer is pretty simple, he's going to be in the slot for the most part until he can prove himself. The rest of OTAs and the preseason will be tell tale signs as to where Apple fits into the Giants' defensive picture. Right now, let's take his Day 1 OTA report as a very good sign. This is a talented kid that came from a great program and coaching staff at Ohio State. Apple is willing to learn and develop, so in my eyes, the sky is the limit for him.
