Mets Acquire First Baseman James Loney For Cash Considerations
I am a fan of this move. Plain and simple. James Loney has always struck me as a soli first baseman from his time with the Dodgers and Rays.
Duda has been somewhat disappointing this season and it may seem crazy, but I think that the drop off between Loney and Duda is extremely small. Yes, Loney has been in the minors for a while, but for what its worth he was raking down there, hitting .342 with Padre Triple-A affiliate.
Loney brings a plus glove and needed contact bat to a surprisingly powerful lineup. While he has no power as a first baseman, he has always been a high average guy. The Mets don't need more home runs, they already lead the league. Its possible he could be an absolute bust given that he was in Triple-A for a reason, but don't be surprised if he hits .280+ in his time platooning with Flores.
So... Sandy Alderson does it again in my book. A cheap, serviceable option at first without giving up anything other than cash considerations. I like it.
Excluding his HORRENDOUS Chris Young and Alejandro de Aza signing, Sandy has been a pretty damn good GM.
