RIP Gordie Howe, "Mr. Hockey."

RIP Gordie Howe, "Mr. Hockey."

Sad day today, not just for hockey fans, but sports fans in general. Not many living human beings today got the chance to see Gordie play, myself included. I really wish I could have though, the guy was the most complete hockey player of all time, even statistically. Today, NHL.com looked through his statistics and actually claimed him the greatest hockey player of all time due to his numbers on the ice. The guy was legendary and you didn't have to be around at the time he was playing to realize it.

His nickname, Mr. Hockey, has stuck with him and hasn't been challenged ever since he retired. This just goes to show the respect the hockey world has for him, let alone how fucking nasty he had to be for a name like that to stand for all these years. Like there hasn't been one player since Howe that came even close to being good enough at hockey to be given the nickname "Mr. Hockey". Recently we've seen Johnny Gaudreau take on the name "Johnny Hockey" but even that I haven't heard since his first couple of weeks in the league.

A lot of people have to hear Mr. Hockey before they hear Gordie Howe to even realize the significance of the person they are talking about. More people probably knew him by the nickname than they did his actual name. It is still to this day one of the more fascinating streaks in all of sports. Extraordinary how much the name has stuck and how deserving the holder of the name truly is. Rest in peace Gordie Howe, a true legend and now one with the hockey Gods.
