The name of the attacker will not be written in this article. In horrible situations like this, the focus should be on the victims, and not the perpetrator.
Sports seem petty in the wake of terrorist attacks that target innocent people. Very early this morning, Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, was the scene of a premeditated attack that killed 50 and injured many more. This is the worst attack on American soil since September 11th, 2001, and the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
President Obama condemned the massacre, saying: "This is an especially heartbreaking day for all our friends -- our fellow Americans -- who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The shooter targeted a nightclub where people came together to be with friends, to dance and to sing, and to live. The place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub -- it is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds, and to advocate for their civil rights."
It was speculated early on that the terrorist had ties to ISIS. As of 4:05, we have learned that ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
If you are in the Orlando area, please consider donating blood. OneBlood is accepting blood from all donors, including gay males. They are reporting that donation sites are currently at capacity, but that the need for blood will still be present in the next few days. For more information please visit oneblood.org.
