Sharks drop Game 2 in OT Trail SCF 2-0
Sharks are in trouble. I honestly thought last night was the game for the Sharks to get back into the series and take home ice advantage, but no. The Sharks aren't playing the way they have been playing all playoffs. They're losing puck battles, sloppy plays in their D zone. it's a nightmare back there. The first goal for the Penguins was too easy for the Pens. Roman Polak who is a scrub anyway absolutely botched a pass to his defensive partner Brenden Dillon which almost lead to a a goal by Kessel earlier in the shift. You would think after the Sharks were scrambling they would just shoot it down ice to slow the play down...wrong again. Dillon tried to skate it out and Carl Hagelin who is one of the fastest players in the league knocked him off the puck like it was nothing slid a pass over to Bonino who waited for Polak who went sliding on his stomach and slid the pass over to fat Phil for the goal. HBK line struck again in these playoffs and there's no stopping them.
Fast forward to late in third when the Sharks finally mustered up some offense and had the game tying goal by Justin Braun his first of the playoffs. At this moment I thought the tides were turning and the Sharks were going to score in OT and send it back to the shark tank 1-1. WRONG. Sid won the face-off with ease nobody picked up the pride and joy of Umass Amherst Conor Sheary, and he ripped it past Martin Jones for a 2-0 series lead.
So, what needs to change for the Sharks in order to get back into this series? Well, the first thing is shots on goal. The Penguins have had a positive shot differential for the past 8 playoff games and the first two games of the Cup Finals have been no different. In Game 1, the Sharks only had 26 shots compared to the Penguins 41. In Game 2, the Penguins had 30 and the Sharks had 22. How can the Sharks get more shots? Their top guys need to start producing. Jumbo Joe is playing like his old playoff self and is pointless in his first two games this series. Same with there Captain, Joe Pavelski, he is also pointless in the first two games of this series. If they want to generate more offense these guys need to get going.
Second thing the Sharks need to do is to try and slow down the speedy Pens. The whole Pens team, especially the HBK line has had their way with the Sharks in the first two games of the series. The Sharks need to start clogging up the neutral zone, force the Pens to dump and chase. If the Sharks can tighten up on D and if the big guys can turn it up they can win both games at home to tie this thing up. If I was Pete Deboer I would scratch Roman Polak guy is a traffic cone out there and he brings nothing to the table besides toughness.
I still don't think the Sharks are going to come back in this series anyway, but anything is possible. Pray for San Jose.
