Blueshirts Dump Rights to Yandle in Favor of Sixth Round and Conditional Pick

Rangers fans are scratching their heads here. The Blueshirts have traded the rights to Keith Yandle to the Panthers for a sixth round pick and a conditional fourth round pick, if the defenseman signs with Florida before his free-agency begins on July 1. He was one of the most productive defensemen points-wise that the Rangers have had since Leetch.

It was an iffy deal back at the deadline in 2015 when the Rangers gave up solid defenseman John Moore and stud forward Anthony Duclair to get Chris Summers and Yandle. With the Rangers neglecting to sign Yandle now, their net gain after a year and a half is Chris Summers, a sixth-round pick and a conditional fourth-round pick.

Trading the rights to a productive defenseman for (maybe) two picks just doesn't make sense to me. They might as well have just asked the Panthers for a case of Natty Ice and one of those sick "Spacey in Space" sweatshirts.
