Where Does the Warriors NBA Finals Loss Rank Among Championship Meltdowns?
Erasing a 3-1 deficit has never occurred in NBA Finals HISTORY, and it happened to the single most winningest regular season team in the Golden State Warriors.
After Game 4, when the Warriors seized a commanding 3-1 lead, BPI had them at a 97% chance to win the series. Having not lost 3 consecutive games since 2013, nobody could have forseen the comeback that the Cavaliers forged. On the shoulders of LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, Cleveland did the impossible.
Now that we have had more than 24 hours to let the result of Game 7 to sink in...
How does the Warriors loss stack up to other tragic Championship Meltdowns in sports history?
Instantly, I related the fall of the 2016 Warriors to that of the 2007 Patriots, who finished 18-1. In both situations, we saw these teams dominate the regular season. Both actually set the single season records for wins, and were outright favorites to win their respective titles.
Since the Golden State loss is fresh in our minds, let's revisit that day in early February 2008, when miracles came true.
Still unbelievable 8 years later...
Another comparable meltdown would be the Yankees in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. After winning three straight World Series and the tragedy of 9/11 still fresh on their minds, the Yankees had the lead going into the 9th with Marino on the bump to close it down for the FOUR PEAT. However, the baseball gods had other plans on that November night.
Mariano gets the job done in that game 99 times out of 100, and it would have made most of those guys 5-time World Series Champs. This was undoubtedly a tragic blow, but perhaps it stings a bit less because they had won the prior three World Series. By the way this was peak Yankee hatred time for everyone around baseball, they were all sick of this team winning every year.
Which brings me to my third and final comparison, the 90s Bills losing FOUR STRAIGHT Super Bowls. This team was undoubtedly the best to never win a title, hell, they were even called a dynasty and they never won anything.
Crazy to think about how these guys felt after losing four straight, obviously the wide right Norwood game hurts the most. But jeez, this team was loaded and right there four times and wound up 0 for 4.
So which one of these meltdowns was the worst? Did I miss any?
