NHL Expands with New Las Vegas Franchise Set to Compete in 2017.
VEGAS BABY!! I like this a lot. The only problem with it is that the conferences are now uneven, so eventually the league is going to have to expand once again so that each conference has 16 teams.
Other than that, in my mind this is going to be really good for the NHL. Like 2 million people live Vegas. They've needed some form of consistent sports entertainment there for a while. Shit other than UFC/Boxing events to get the people going you know? Now the good people of Las Vegas will have an actual sports team to go to the games and cheer on, and I think it'll ultimately be great for the city. In my mind, Vegas needs a team in every major sport, not just hockey, but ya gotta start somewhere. I'm actually surprised it took this long if I'm being honest.
The name they're going with so far is the Black Knights, which isn't bad. I guess as a fan of the league you feel like you could always come up with something better, so the fact that they came with something that doesn't make me want to puke right off the bat is a good sign. Hopefully this means some form of dapper black unis, but we'll just have to wait and see.
As for the actual make-up of the team, they should be relatively competitive early on, as the restrictions as to who they can and cannot take aren't that strict. Teams are allowed to protect 7 forwards, three defensemen, and one goalie from being taken by the new franchise, which likely means the new Vegas squad won't have any major superstars, but they should be able to put together a decent team if they play their cards right.
Other than that, it's really just another reason for people to take a weekend trip to the City of Sin. Having a professional sports team will only help the league and the great city of Las Vegas in my eyes.
P.S. If you're Vegas, you gotta make betting on these games legal within the first few seasons, it's the only way a team will survive in a city known for its gambling.
