Add Jason Day to the List of Athletes Skipping Rio
It's hard to place the blame on any of these athletes that are opting out of the action in Rio this summer. The Zika virus is just festering and lingering through every particle in the air, there's poop water like basically wherever water is, and it's just an overall SHIT SHOW (pun intended) if we're being honest.
The Zika virus essentially is guaranteed to cause birth defects in children if the mother contracts it while pregnant. Males can carry it and transfer it to their partner, hence causing more birth defects. What happens exactly is that the baby isn't born with strong enough tissue to hold their skulls together, and their heads cave in. Brutal stuff, and unfortunately it has impacted 4,800 newborns in Brazil.
What erks me the most about this situation is how corrupt the Olympic committee is. What kind of fuck stick with half of a brain would choose this site to host the games?
It's truly unbelievable, and it pisses me off.
Athletes that are on the fringe in terms of making a name for themselves and competing for a gold medal, are now faced with a gut wrenching decision. Do you run the risk of contracting Zika and go? Or do you play it safe but potentially miss out on a golden opportunity?
This is the decision hundreds of athletes have been contemplating from all around the world, and one that is certainly difficult.
My hope is that they find a way to somehow contain the virus and whatever other risks are down there in Brazil. While I understand that is a stretch, we are still over a month out from the start of the games, so all you can do is hope.
Nevertheless, the situation with this Summer's games is unacceptable and a real shame. One can only hope that the selection committee learns their lesson going forward, and stops choosing underdeveloped countries. Simple solution to what is now a very, very intricate problem.
