Rangers Trade Brassard for Zibanejad
After weeks of waiting, the Rangers have finally made a significant trade this off season. The Rangers have traded Derick Brassard and a seventh rounder in 2018 to Ottawa, in exchange for Mika Zibanejad and a second rounder in 2018.
Right of the bat Rangers fans were displeased with this trade even though it's everything they could want all in one trade. Brassard had a career year with 27 genos and 31 helpers, but Zibanejad also had a career year with 21 goals and 30 assists. So, the production is about the same. Zibanejad is 23, Brass is 28. Okay, so Zibanejad is five years younger. That's a plus for the Rangers. His cap hit is 2.6 million compared to 5 million for Brassard. Well, that's helpful as well. Oh and lastly, they swapped a seventh round pick for a second.
Am I missing something here? How are people upset about this? This is a solid trade in every aspect. Yeah you lose a fan favorite, but this is a business and the Rangers aren't here to make friends.
Generally speaking, Brassard should start to plateau numbers wise, while Zibanejad has his best years ahead of him still. Good trade on paper, hopefully it works out on the ice as well.
