Familia Notches His League Leading 30th Save
Jeurys Familia has been an absolute workhorse for the Mets this year in the closer role. Familia leads all of baseball in saves with his 30th coming today against the Marlins. Jeurys had the difficult job today of facing the RED HOT Giancarlo Stanton to start the 9th, who has four monster home runs in his last four ABs.
The man singlehandedly defeated the Mets last night with two home runs, and then hit two more today after a first inning walk. However, Familia showed why he's the league leader in saves by fanning Stanton with a 96mph sinker that made one of the prettiest swings in baseball look flat-out gross. Stanton didn't even get a full swing on the ball before turing around for his walk of shame towards the dugout. Jeurys went on to let up a single to right field before getting the veteran speedster, Ichiro, to ground into a beauty of a game-ending double play.
Familia was a Final Vote candidate for last year's All-Star Game, and as of today was announced to the 2016 NL All-Star team. He's 26-years-old with a fastball AND a sinker that top out in the 95-100mph range. He also hasn't blown a save since the World Series last year. It's pretty safe to say that Jeurys has a very bright future in this league and ideally still with this team.
